Brief notes and thoughts for October 2021
In this edition: art, music, and free weed for my friends.
Free weed for my friends (serious)
Friend and list member Kevin Broome and I recently launched a pilot project to partner an artistic work (in this case a short story by Kevin) with a complementary herbal selection, in roughly the way in which a sommelier seeks to pair a gourmet meal with just the right fine wine.
If this sounds like fun to you, please join us as a beta tester for the project. Drop me an email or text containing the secret code word "marsupial" and I will deliver/send a copy of the first pairing to you. No obligations or fees are involved.
San Sheng: list member Yuluo Wei's new art and fashion space
Curator, friend and list member Yuluo Wei has opened a unique new art space-slash-high fashion boutique in north Toronto, called San Sheng, featuring *very* nice designer clothing pieces, lifestyle items, and artistic shows and happenings. I stopped by the space the other day in the course of Yuluo and co’s current soft launch and was blown away by the ambition and excellence of the project. Check out their Instagram page for an early glimpse of what they are up to: https://www.instagram.com/sanshengca/
Better with Purpose Podcast
List member and friend Michael Plater Findlay has a new podcast, Better with Purpose, featuring interviews with people who put purpose at the heart of their work, whether in business, not-for-profits, community organizations, or other kinds of schemes. I've been enjoying it a lot - it is fun, intelligent and occasionally a bit quirky, featuring guests such as a socially innovative bean farmer, an advocate for neurodiverse people in the workforce, and yours truly, among others.

What are you reading/watching/listening to?
I asked list member and Guelph-based musician and producer Hymns 57 this question. Here's what he had to say:
There's many bands that release music but there's nothing quite like a new Godspeed You! Black Emperor album arriving in the depths of a pandemic, existing as a coping mechanism for all the emotional and mental ailments we've all been experiencing. The ideal soundtrack for the caterwaul inside your mind.
Sample track
I should also note that Hymns' work has served me in a similar way during this pandemic. If the Godspeed was too much for you I recommend this gentle acoustic piece by Hymns as a respite.
That’s all, folks. Thanks for reading this far, and let me know with updates from your end, questions, thoughts, story ideas, hot tips, etc., at nicholascarldinka@gmail.com.
